Abstract:

Dr. Kelly Bannister presented her work to a multidisciplinary audience of scholars, students and Indigenous leaders at the University of Providence, and also had the opportunity to discuss it with members of the Canadian Trade Office of Taipei (CTOT). Members of CTOT were particularly interested in Dr. Bannister’s work on developing protocols and research agreements between universities and local communities concerning the documentation and use of Indigenous cultural knowledge. CTOT representative Sumeeta Chandavarkar also expressed concern about the lack of any ethical standards in Taiwan for research involving Indigenous peoples and an interest to continue discussions about a proposed national ethics standard for Taiwan based on existing international norms, lessons from countries such as Canada, and consultations with Indigenous communities in Taiwan. Members from the Geography Department of the Taiwan National Normal University also invited Kelly Bannister to the international conference that is being organised in Taipei in November 2005.
